Stop and Go

2010

Stop and Go – a pair of prints, each in a double-sided glass frame -  continues in the same vein as Turk’s auto-related readymades which operate as literal puns on the Art Car Boot sales for which the works were originally created. Stop and Go, in particular transforms archaic roadside commands and signs which have gradually been fazed out of use into the visual language of art. The work is also a visual Benny Hill-style joke in relation to the loaded cliché of the archetypal white van (a recurring theme in Turk’s work) and the comedy of the rudimentary – and sometimes random – means of the road worker’s power to control traffic.
